Showing individuals how to cook simple, affordable, and healthy meals.

In 2011, the nutrition team at Chicken Soup Brigade started the Pots & Plans cooking and nutrition program.  The program is a mobile series of classes designed to teach seniors* how to make healthy, affordable, and simple meals at home, while addressing common health concerns.  Since then, we have brought the program to thousands of seniors around King County and beyond.  Through this work, we have found that combining nutrition messages with practical skills is a successful and realistic way to help individuals make beneficial changes to what they cook and how they eat.

*Although our program was designed for seniors, the information, recipes and classes are beneficial for everyone and the curriculum can be tailored to educate groups of all ages.

Pots & Plans – Demonstration Style, Full Series (6 classes)       

  • 6-week series of cooking classes (approximately 1 hour), demonstrated cooking techniques
  • Taught by skilled nutrition professionals (Registered Dietitians) from Chicken Soup Brigade
  • Evidence-based nutrition topics addressing health conditions faced by the senior population (50+)
  • Recipe packets and nutrition education materials provided to each participant, including recipes tested by the CSB dietitians, nutrition information, basic cooking reviews and recipes emphasizing affordable ingredients
  • Learning activities presented in each class to aid learning of nutrition topic
  • 10 bag raffle per class, with ingredients to prepare one of the recipes made in the class                                                                                                                   

 

Pots & Plans – Demonstration Style, 1 Class                               

  • Single cooking class (approximately 1 hour), demonstrated cooking techniques
  • Taught by skilled nutrition professionals (Registered Dietitians) from Chicken Soup Brigade
  • Evidence-based nutrition topics addressing health conditions faced by seniors. 
  • Options to choose from the following topics:

  • Recipe packet provided to each class participants, including recipes tested by the CSB dietitians, nutrition information, basic cooking reviews and recipes corresponding with the weekly theme
  • Learning activities presented in each class to aid learning of nutrition topic
  • 10 bag raffle with ingredients to prepare one of the featured recipes

 

Pots & Plans – Community Kitchen Style, 1 class                     

  • Single cooking class (approximately 3 hours), includes shared meal among participants
  • Taught by skilled nutrition professionals (Registered Dietitians) from Chicken Soup Brigade
  • Participants participate in preparation of the meal together, with oversight by CSB dietitian
  • Themes or topics for the class may be decided upon ahead of time, with input of the partnering organization or class participants
  • Recipe(s) and information shared during the cooking class are included in an informational packet that participants take home
  • Nutrition education is informal, and responsive to questions and concerns of participants                                                                                                  

 

Additional Options

In-Class Interpretation:

The CSB nutrition team has worked closely with many groups that speak limited or no English, enlisting interpreters in the community or through Dynamic Language, a Seattle-based company specializing in interpretation and translation.  If you have participants in need of interpretive services, we are happy to work with the interpreters you identify for the class.

 

Translated Resources:

With previous funding, some of the Pots & Plans materials have been translated into target languages.  Translated resources include recipe packets or partial recipe packets in the following languages:  Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian and Chinese.  These can be provided to class participants at no additional cost for the course.  However, please advise us in advance of class start to ensure these resources are available on the day of class.
